downgrading ase to 3.22.1 shows no module ase.mep found

After installing the vre-language package, downgrading the ASE version to 3.22.1 as workaround to #383 (closed) the following error message is printed when executing a model:

Configuration error: An error ocurred during initialization. Check your configuration files.
No module named 'ase.mep'
