How to easily migrate your element account
This is a short step-by-step instruction on how to easily migrate from one element account to another (e.g. from your student account to an employee account) while keeping all your contacts, rooms and message history.
1. Step
Make sure all your element clients are up to date. Otherwise, there might be compatibility issues.
2. Step
Export your E2E room keys. Otherwise, you won't be able to see your old encrypted messages.
Settings -> Security & Privacy-> Export E2E room keys
3. Step
Create your new account following the instructions on https://docs.matrix.kit.edu/.
4. Step
Use your old account to invite your new account to all your room and direct messages and then leave with your old account.
Ensure invited people can read old messages (this should be the default setting and is displayed when you invite new people to the chat). This gives your contacts the convenience that nothing changes on their side (by the side of your new user name if you changed it).
5. Step
Import the previously exported E2E room keys so you can read your old messages.
Settings -> Security & Privacy-> Import E2E room keys
6. Steps
Through the process of adding a new person to a direct message this chat will now be displayed under roomsand not under peopleon your new account (even after you leave with your old account).
This can be fixed by typing the slash command /converttodm in every chat that you want to be displayed under people.
